Did You Know? The Most Powerful Magnet in the Universe

In our early childhood, most of us have played with a magnet. But after being an adult, some of us might feel weird to play with a magnet. Did you ever think about the power of the Strongest magnet?

Unknown to many, the most powerful magnet on earth which is known as “Neodymium Magnets” but did you know the most powerful magnet in the Universe.

I wondered, No. Most of us did not even familiar with Neodymium Magnets.

As we know “Neodymium magnets” is the strongest magnet ever created on earth. Though it is not so harmful we do not have to fear from this magnet.

So, in this post of TechSpit, we are going to introduce you with the most powerful magnet in the known Universe.

The most powerful object in the whole Universe is known by the name “Magnetar.” This object is identified as Soft Gamma Repeater. The closets, magnetar is about 50,000 light-years away from our planet and named as “SGR 1806-20.”

What is magnetar

A magnetar is a kind of neutron star speculated to have an extremely powerful magnetic field of ~109to 1011 Tesla

Size of a Magnetar

Magnetars are around 20 km (12.43 miles) in diameter and have a mass equivalent to 1-2 times than our sun. It means a sugar-cub-sized amount of material would weigh more than 1 billion tons, which is around ( 907184740000 kg) which is equal to the weight of Mount Everest.

How Does a Magnetar forms

When a massive star collapse under its own gravity during a supernova explosion, it forms either a neutron star or a black hole.Magnetars are a very unique and very bizarre form of the neutron star.

Where it is located

The closets magnetar which is named “SGR 1806-20” is located 50,000 light-years away from the opposite side of the Milky Way Galaxy. This magnetar is invisible in visible light.

Life Span

The average life span of a magnetar is not so long. 10,000 years later,  strong magnetic fields decay and start seizing the X-Ray Emission.

How many Magnetars are there in the Universe

While there are 3000 known neutrons stars. Scientists have only confirmed 31 magnetars in the universe.

Now we have understood how powerful a magnet is. The scientist has recently found a Neutron star with an age of only 240 years. It’s quite amazing for scientists to found an extraterrestrial object with the age of only 240 years. They are calling it a “newborn” by Cosmic Standards and named it as Swift J1818.0-1607.

According to NASA, this neutron star has 2 times more mass than our sun and it belongs to a special class of objects known as Magnetar.
